8Ball and MJG interview
Memphis born and raised rappers 8Ball and MJG have been making albums since 1993 when they came out with their first album ‘Comin’ Out Hard’. After releasing many albums and mixtapes both together and as solo artists this remarkable rap duo are all set to drop some more of that ‘Space Age’ music when their new album ‘Ten Toes Down’ is released in May 2010.
Can you tell us how you both met and became 8Ball and MJG?
8Ball: We met in junior high school we found out that we lived a few blocks from each other and we’ve been friends ever since. Rapping started out as just a hobby it was just one of those things that everybody did at school. I guess somewhere a long the way we got good at it because all of our friends did it but people gravitated towards what we did. Then we started making records as 8Ball and MJG and we just went along with the flow and things started to happen.
You were both born and raised in Memphis home of artists like Three 6 Mafia, Indo G and Playa Fly to name a few but you signed to Suave House Records which was based in Houston. How did that come about?
8Ball: Tony Draper who owned Suave House Records knew some of the same people who we knew in Memphis. We all became friends moved to Houston and we made ‘Coming out hard’ and that was like the beginning of it. That’s basically how it went down, he was looking for a rap group and we we’re looking for whatever we could do at the time. It was a great opportunity for us to move to another city and make our music.
MJG: Yeah that was the beginning right there.
At that time when you moved to Houston and you were signed to Suave House do you think your music fitted the sound coming out of Houston at that time more than the sound that was coming out of Memphis?
MJG: It was really still influenced of what was coming out of Memphis because we were doing a lot of the production and stuff ourselves. When we added another producer onto the team he was also from Memphis. So our sound was still Memphis influenced but us being in Houston it probably did play into it somewhere.
You where one of the first groups to use Pen and Pixel artwork what was it like working with them? Those covers were really stood out they were bold and bright did they come up with concepts or did you work together?
8Ball: It was a combination of both, we’d come up with a certain portion of the idea. They would ask and see if we liked it, should I take this away or add this you know? So really it was a combination of both it was their creativity and our idea.
You’ve been releasing music since 1993 when you first put out ‘Comin out hard’ besides your latest project what has been your favourite album you’ve released and why?
MJG: Right now I would say ‘Comin’ out hard’ not because of the songs on it, or the music or whatever just because of the time that it was and the things that were going on at that time.
8Ball: I love them all! (Laughs) But I would say ‘Comin out hard’ right now because I agree with what MJG said. Every album we ever done was kind of a journey through our minds and what was going on in our lives at that time. I think ‘Comin out hard’ brings back a lot of good memories you know?
One of my favourite tracks is ‘Space age Pimpin’ from the ‘On top of the world’ album will there be any joints like that on the new album ‘Ten Toes Down’?
8Ball: Yeah definitely it’s going to sound like 2010 though it’s brand new 8Ball and MJG. We’ve got a song called ‘So fine’ and it’s kind of on the level of ‘Space age pimpin’ to me.
Let’s talk about the new album ‘Ten Toes Down’ what can we expect to hear from both of you on this joint?
MJG: You’ll be able to hear the 8Ball and MJG sound but just keeping it in the space age you know? We’ve been keeping it space age for a long time and basically it’s us doing us but with new ideas and a new twist but still not getting too far outside of 8Ball and MJG.
This album will be released through Grand Hustle how did this deal come about?
8Ball: We’re not signed to Grand Hustle we’re doing like a joint venture business deal with them, it’s a partnership. It came about through T.I who is a big fan of our music and over the years we’ve worked and been around each other a few times. Our managers came together and now you’ve got 8Ball, MJG and Grand Hustle! (Laughs) That’s basically it!
Can you tell us about the single ‘Ten Toes Down’
MJG: That track was produced by Drumma Boy he’s a producer from Memphis by the way of ATL. It’s a like a real gritty, grimy kind of song. The title ‘Ten toes down, means we’ve been feet on the ground, planted in what we’ve been doing ever since we began to do it.
There’s also a video to that track where can people out side of the US go and watch that?
8Ball: Yeah we shot a video for that track it’s on World Star Hip Hop or You Tube right now so make sure you take a look at it.
The album is set to be released in May what producers and other artists have you hooked up with?
MJG: We’ve definitely got a lot of Drumma Boy production on there; he did ‘Ten toes down’ and a lot of great songs on the album. We got Frank Nitty out of ATL he did the new single ‘DJ bring it back’ with Young Dro on it.
8Ball: He also did the joint ‘Smokin’ chokin’ locin’ with Snoop Dogg. Of course we’ve got T.I the King on there. There’s a lot of great music on there.
MJG: Yeah a lot of great 8Ball and MJG!
I bet! I can’t wait to hear the album. As 8Ball and MJG you’ve released about 10 albums but you’ve also do solo projects is this something that you’ll continue to do, I mean 8Ball you did an album with E.D.I from The Outlawz would you do another album collaborating with another artist?
8Ball: Yeah definitely that’s the business doing that and being able to do stuff like working with another artist. That’s what’s good about being independent.
You’ve been dropping albums since 1993 how do you feel about how the game has changed since then, do you feel it’s got better or worse?
MJG: I think we both feel that it is what it is you know? I don’t think it’s got worse, I think that it’s grown and evolved into what it is now. In a way I think it’s got better because there are a lot more regions with different styles and a lot of artists coming out from different places all over the world now which makes it better.
Yeah there are many different artists coming out from all over the world and networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, MySpace do help with promotion. Has using these sites helped you to realise that you have fans all over the world?
8Ball: Definitely people can talk to you now from all over the world! On a certain level it’s a lot bigger because you couldn’t get on the internet back when we started and talk to somebody in Germany if you were in Jackson, Mississippi. Before it was only people in Jackson Mississippi who would hear your music you know what I mean? Right now a kid with a laptop from Memphis Tennessee can talk to a kid with a laptop in the UK, Japan or anywhere in the world! That’s the beauty of these sites.
Have you ever toured outside the USA?
8Ball: No we’ve never toured outside the US.
MJG: (Laughs) we want to though we’d love to come out there….So hey! Are we invited out there?
I would love to invite you out here but I don’t think the UK is ready for 8Ball and MJG yet! That southern sound hasn’t really taken off here but I still continue to support and push it! Guys what are your hopes for this album when it drops?
8Ball: The UK needs to look out for 8Ball and MJG ‘Ten toes down’ dropping May 4th 2010 everybody in UK needs to go and get a copy of it when it comes out!!
MJG: Yeah everybody in the UK go get a copy and support us. We hope that everybody who has been supporting us all this time enjoys the album and we appreciate it.
I’d like to thank you both for taking the time out to do your first UK interview!
MJG: Thank you we appreciate it!
8Ball: Thank you!

Official statement from DJ Premier on the passing of Guru
IT WAS A SAD DAY FOR ME TO GET CONFIRMATION ON THE DEATH OF A MAN WHO I WILL CONTINUE TO CALL MY BROTHER, KEITH ELAM, BETTER KNOWN AS GURU OF THE LEGENDARY GANG STARR.
FROM 1988-2004, WE EXPERIENCED SO MUCH SUCCESS TOGETHER THAT WE WERE ABLE TO EXPAND OUR BUSINESSES INDEPENDENTLY AND GIVE EACH OTHER WHAT GURU CALLED “CREATIVE SPACE”, BEFORE PLANNING TO REUNITE FOR OUR 7TH LP WHEN THE TIME WAS RIGHT. TRAGICALLY, WE WILL NEVER REACH THAT DAY.
I’VE BEEN ASKED TO COMMENT ON A LETTER SPEAKING ILL OF ME WHICH WAS SUPPOSEDLY WRITTEN BY GURU IN HIS DYING DAYS. ALL I WILL SAY ABOUT IT IS THAT OUR TIME TOGETHER WAS BEAUTIFUL, WE BUILT A HIP HOP LEGACY TOGETHER, AND NO ONE CAN RE-WRITE HISTORY OR TAKE AWAY MY LOVE FOR HIM. ONE THING I WOULD NEVER DO IS PLAY AROUND WITH THE TRUTH ABOUT HIS LIFE.
I WILL CELEBRATE GURU’S LIFE… I WILL HONOR HIS MEMORY… I WILL GRIEVE WITH THE ELAM FAMILY OVER HIS UNTIMELY DEATH… I WILL REMEMBER THE GANG STARR FOUNDATION AND ALL OF THE ORIGINAL MEMBERS OF GANG STARR WHO CAME BEFORE ME – WE ALL KNOW EACH OTHER… MOSTLY, I WILL CHERISH EVERYTHING WE CREATED TOGETHER AS GANG STARR, FOREVER. I’M GONNA MISS HEARING HIS SIGNATURE MONOTONE VOICE WHEN HE WALKS IN THE ROOM, BUT THE SONGS WILL ALWAYS BRING IT BACK TO ME….HIS RHYME FLOWS WERE INSANE, AND I WILL NEVER REMOVE HIM FROM MY HEART AND SOUL…….REST IN PEACE TO THE MAN WHO FELT “SATISFACTION FROM THE STREET CROWD REACTION” … I LOVE YOU GOO…….DJ PREMIER

British Hip-Hop band Credit To The Nation are back
Credit To The Nation, are set for an eagerly awaited return this summer, with the release of a new single in August, and full length album to follow.
Formed by Matthew “Matty” Hanson, aka MC Fusion, the group made a commercial impact in the early nineties with a slew of political hits. Their breakthrough single, ‘Call It What You Want’, sampled the guitar riff used by Nirvana on ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. Late legendary DJ, John Peel played it on his John Peel Session show on BBC Radio 1, which led to a record deal with One Little Indian, a label famed for its successes with Bjork & The Shamen.
Their highest selling single, ‘Teenage Sensation’ reached number 23 in the UK Singles Chart, and was backed by veteran DJ Mark Goodyear. The subsequent single ‘Hear No Bullshit, See No Bullshit, Say No Bullshit’ was followed by the release of their debut album ‘Take Dis’.
Remarkably for a Hip-Hop group, all Credit To The Nation singles reached number 1 in the Melody Maker and NME independent label charts. This gathered the band a large indie following, which saw them tour with acts such as the Manic Street Preachers, and perform live at The Glastonbury NME stage (’94), Phoenix Festival (‘94/95), and the Reading Festival Melody Maker Stage (’94).
The album, which is not just a return to form, but a reinvention of the signature sound, features up-and-coming singer/songwriter Nathan White and label mate Charly Vox. Not to mention collaborations with Chuck D (Public Enemy) and Sadat X (Brand Nubian), which reflects the respect Credit holds within the urban community and American artists.
The Slade Rooms in Wolverhampton, UK will host the bands first show in eight years on 15th May, along with dub trance heavyweights, Dreadzone. Credit are also confirmed to play ‘Endorse it in Dorset’ on 8th August.
Short Film about the roots of London’s Pirate Radio scene
Vice Magazine and VBS.TV collaborate with Palladium Boots to launch new urban exploration series, Uneven Terrain. Uneven Terrain uncovers the hidden, underground and forgotten corners of the world’s leading metropolises. The series makes its UK debut with a film investigating the roots of London’s enigmatic Pirate Radio scene. The series comes to the UK with an exploration into the world of Pirate Radio, a phenomenon born out of British sea forts in the '60s. This episode follows the team as they sail to the mouth of the Thames to find the forts to see where it all began; meeting the pioneers of pirate radio who defined an era by playing the music London wanted to hear.
When the authorities shut them down, pirate sounds went underground. Pirate stations are now an established scene in London, broadcasting music and the sounds of youth culture, from secret tower block studios. In constant contact with listeners via text messaging and chat forums, today's pirates are the essence of mobile. Today you can find it in urban centres around the UK, pushing youth culture forward one neighbourhood at a time.
During the making of Uneven Terrain, VBS.TV climbed to the tops of urban tower blocks to find homemade pirate antennas and were blindfolded and driven to the secret London studios where pirate culture thrives today. Host of the show Matt Mason, a former pirate radio broadcaster and author of best selling book The Pirate’s Dilemma, meet with DJs and station managers, rappers and MCs, and interviewed DJ Scratcha from RINSE FM, MC Flirt from old-school KOOL FM, J2K, Jammer and KISS FM's Logan Sama.
Uneven Terrain also explores how pirate broadcasters today reach people not just locally but online to audiences across the world. From open waters, to urban centres, to your PC, the state of pirate radio is constantly evolving.
Paul Wall to drop ‘Heart of a Champion’ in June
Paul Wall is all set to drop his 4th major label album, Heart of a Champion, on June 29th through SwishaHouse/Asylum Records. Almost half of the tracks featured on the album are produced by long-time friend and Expensive Taste band-mate, Travis Barker. The album will also feature several songs from Expensive Taste, the group which includes Skinhead Rob (Transplants) in addition to Paul and Travis.
Houston-based production duo, Beanz N Kornbread, are credited with the majority of the tracks not produced by Travis, including lead single “I’m on Patron”, a lyrical documentary of a feeling that most of us have experienced - and greatly regretted the next day - that of simply having too much fun of the liquid variety. “I'm On Patron” is the perfect accompaniment to that 'blame it on the alcohol' kind of night and sure to be a party staple.
“Heart of a Champion” includes a diverse list of cast members including Jim Jones, Yelawolf and Raekwon but do not ignore Paul’s Houston roots; Bun B, Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Devin the Dude and Lil’ Keke each get their turn at the mic. Another Houston feature is Johnny Dang aka TV Johnny with whom Paul Wall shares a grills and jewellery business which caters to A-list celebrities and average Joes alike.
Always an advocate for the Texas music scene, Paul Wall was recently tapped as President of The Recording Academy’s Texas Chapter. In this role, he hopes to educate and enlist the help of Texas musicians from every genre, to ensure that the state is well represented in the Grammy’s voting body. The natural politician in Paul Wall makes him the perfect candidate for this role. He embodies his moniker, “The Peoples Champ.”

RIP Guru
Hip-Hop legend Guru, founder of GangStarr and Jazzmatazz, has passed away yesterday morning (April 19) after a long battle with cancer. Guru suffered from the malicious illness for over a year but after numerous special treatments under the supervision of medical specialists failed, the legendary MC succumbed to the disease. Guru always tried to keep this harrowing diagnosis in private but in early 2010 he had to admit himself to hospital due to serious effects caused by the disease. Since the onset of illness, Guru tried to live a "normal" life as an influential and outstanding musician, loving father, family man, and best friend. Doctors encouraged Guru to think positive that the cancer can be arrested and that a full recovery is possible but several special treatments including hard hitting chemotherapies failed. While in hospital with terminal cancer, Guru knew that his destiny is sealed and he took the time in the last couple of weeks to write some words to his fans addressing his illness, his shining music career, his family and loved ones including his best friend and longtime partner Solar.
"I, Guru, am writing this letter to my fans, friends and loved ones around the world. I have had a long battle with cancer and have succumbed to the disease. I have suffered with this illness for over a year. I have exhausted all medical options. I have a non-profit organization called Each One Counts dedicated to carrying on my charitable work on behalf of abused and disadvantaged children from around the world and also to educate and research a cure for this terrible disease that took my life. I write this with tears in my eyes, not of sorrow but of joy for what a wonderful life I have enjoyed and how many great people I have had the pleasure of meeting," read Guru's official statement which the legendary MC has written down in the last weeks.
"My loyal best friend, partner and brother, Solar, has been at my side through it all and has been made my health proxy by myself on all matters relating to myself. He has been with me by my side on my many hospital stays, operations, doctors visits and stayed with me at my home and cared for me when I could not care for myself. Solar and his family is my family and I love them dearly and I expect my family, friends, and fans to respect that, regardless to anybody's feelings on the matter. It is my wish that counts. This being said I am survived by the love of my life, my sun KC, who I trust will be looked after by Solar and his family as their own. Any awards or tributes should be accepted, organized approved by Solar on behalf myself and my son until he is of age to except on his own."
"I do not wish my ex-DJ to have anything to do with my name likeness, events tributes etc. connected in anyway to my situation including any use of my name or circumstance for any reason and I have instructed my lawyers to enforce this. I had nothing to do with him in life for over 7 years and want nothing to do with him in death. Solar has my life story and is well informed on my family situation, as well as the real reason for separating from my ex-DJ. As the sole founder of GangStarr, I am very proud of what GangStarr has meant to the music world and fans. I equally am proud of my Jazzmatazz series and as the father of Hip-Hop/Jazz. I am most proud of my leadership and pioneering efforts on 'Jazzmatazz 4' for reinvigorating the Hip-Hop/Jazz genre in a time when music quality has reached an all time low. Solar and I have toured in places that I have never been before with GangStarr or Jazzmatatazz and we gained a reputation for being the best on the planet at Hip-Hop/Jazz, as well as the biggest and most influential Hip-Hop/Jazz record with 'Jazzmatazz 4' of the decade to now. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time. And we as a team were not afraid to push the envelope. To me this is what true artists do! As men of honor we stood tall in the face of small mindedness, greed, and ignorance. As we fought for music and integrity at the cost of not earning millions and for this I will always be happy and proud, and would like to thank the million fans who have seen us perform over the years from all over the world. The work I have done with Solar represents a legacy far beyond its time and is my most creative and experimental to date. I hope that our music will receive the attention it deserves as it is some of the best work I have done and represents some of the best years of my life."
Guru's longtime partner and best friend, Solar, issues an official statement about the lost of the legendary MC, read below:
"The world has lost one of the best MCs and Hip-Hop icons of all time -- my loyal best friend, partner, and brother, Guru! Guru has been battling cancer for well over a year and has lost his battle! This is a matter that Guru wanted private until he could beat it but tragically this did not happen. The cancer took him. Now the world has lost a great man and a true genius. For the fans that reached out with love and support, I can't tell you how much that meant to Guru and myself. Guru prepared this letter while he was in the hospital for the fans. I hope now that Guru has moved on to a better place! Guru is a great Black American Hero and should always be remembered as such and he is much more that just a Hip-Hop icon -- he has changed the world for the better. I salute my fallen brother Guru! He will be missed tremendously!" Solar stated.
Our condolences go out to the Guru's family.

‘End Of The Weak World Champion’Jack Flash releases free E.P
MC and producer Jack Flash released his latest project this month ‘The Sounds of Colour’ EP available as a free download on his website http://www.jackflashmusic.com/. The 13 track project is the follow up to his 2008 debut, the ‘The Union Jack Album released on Klinik Records.
The EP features no vocal guest spots except Zimbabwean singer Thabo who blesses a supremely soulful hook on “Slow Down”. This is a definite evolution from Flash’s 2008 album, as the lyricism has excelled as midway through ‘The Sound Of Colours’ it becomes evident how Flash won the 2009 End Of The Weak World Championship.
The project is to be supported by a nationwide tour between February and June.

E-40 Dropped 3 releases on the same day!
Bay Area rapper E-40 made a bold decision to drop three separate releases all on the same day March 30th. Due to the methods employed by Sound Scan this decision would prevent him from combining all three numbers into one large sales figure and hence restrict his ability to chart as high as possible on the Billboard top 200. However, Sound Scan reports the E-40 albums take the #5, #6 and #14 spots on the Top Rap Albums chart with nearly 30,000 units scanned. This is a combined total that would translate to a Top 20 debut on the Top 200 Billboard chart.
"I got out there, did my homework and went back to my roots and made these albums for the streets that made me. Then I utilized the internet and engaged in social networking by interacting with my fans and I found out what they wanted and what they liked best. Then I considered the state of this economy recognizing that people want the hook up, they want more and that's exactly what I gave them. Most albums have 10 or 12 tracks on them, I exceeded that number then I doubled my product giving my fans who are also consumers a bigger bang for their buck, "smiles the Ambassador of the Bay, E-40. You go there E-40 we’re loving his style on this!!
Fans can keep up with E-40 as he continues promoting "Revenue Retrievin Day Shift" and "Revenue Retrievin Night Shift" on www.Twitter.com/thereale40 www.myspace.com/e40
Reggae artist Jah Cure Speaks on U.S. Revoking Jamaican celebrity Visas
The recent cancellation of the visas of several prominent Jamaican performers, including Bounty Killer, Mavado and Beenie Man, international reggae star Jah Cure has been inspired to put down his feelings in a passionate track called "Save Yourself."
On April 1, 2010, Jah Cure naturally assumed the internet news he was reading about the United States cancelling the visas of several top Jamaican dancehall artists was an April Fools’ Day joke. By mid-day the news was official; the U.S. Embassy in Kingston, Jamaica had cancelled the visas. The revocation includes orders for no airlines to allow those affected on board U.S.-bound flights. Cure felt inspired when he thought of his idol Bob Marley’s words of ‘Get up stand up, stand up for your rights’ so he headed straight to the studio and recorded "Save Yourself’ as his message to Jamaica and all Caribbean nations. In the song Jah Cure urges his Jamaican and Caribbean brethren to save themselves, to save their countries, their economies, their families and their children.
Jah Cure is currently working on his sixth studio album, and his official single "Unconditional Love" - already a hit in Jamaica - will be released to fans worldwide on May 4, 2010. Cure begins his first official tour of Africa this summer, followed by several performances in Mexico. He will return to Jamaica to headline the International Night at Reggae SumFest in July.

The tale of Ty an artist who after ten years, three critically acclaimed albums (Awkward 2001, Upwards 2003, Closer 2006), collaborations with the likes of Tony Allen, De La Soul, and Estelle, a Mercury nomination amongst other accolades, and a worldwide army of fans, has always followed his heart. He will be performing new and already classic material for this knowledgeable fun loving crowd.
Ty is without a doubt one of the most talented and unique MCs in the UK. Never one to follow the crowd he has always cut his own path, refusing to jump on bandwagons or to fit into musical boxes. Much loved for his lyrical honesty, ability to conjure emotion-fuelled poetry out of every day realities, dynamic live shows, and his eclectic sense of musicality On The Real is in for a real treat as Ty hits the stage with his DJ Big Ted.
